I wanted a good deal because I knew, just like the old ones, they would get worn often, maybe even everyday. So the search was on.... Today I set out on two missions: 1) to try to interview Butch, my favorite barber and 2) try and find some organic shampoo products. Having no luck procuring an interview, I instead set out to locate Dr. Bronner's and Burt's Bees items in order to concoct the ultimate shampoo. First, I tried the local beauty supply store on 8th Street SE. All I came out with were the two 8 oz. bottles needed for my mixture. I then traveled down and across the street to Yes Organic Market, where I found some Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild Soap and some loofah body scrubbers as a bonus.

My next stop was just across 6th Street to the CVS in search of some Burt's Bees. The soap was not related to the mixture, but much needed nonetheless. The Dr. Bronner's soap is to be added to some pure tea tree oil, which should combat my dry scalp. Again, the Burt's Bee soap is an extra item on my shopping list. Upon entering the second CVS store (located at 500 12th ST SE 202-543-1555) things get surreal. I ask the first woman I encounter with a badge on, who it tuns out, is the manager. Her name is Caroline. She looks me up and down and directs me to the Burt's Bees display.

No luck, so I check out the soap aisle. I then notice another worker, a middle aged black woman like the first employee, scrutinizing me. As I exit the store both women stop me saying the security camera saw me lift some Burt's Bees products. I'm thinking "WTF? Don't do this to me." Like I'm her 4 year-old grandson, Elisha finger points me to empty the contents of my "trench coat pockets". C'mon, I've heard of DWB, but SWB?" But I calmly comply. I think to myself " This store MUST get hit up a lot for Burt's Bees products". They are THE BOMB.

It gets worse captivated reader. After I empty out coat items (Flip camera, iPod, water, and granola mix), I'm told to put the contents of pant's pockets (keys, wallet and phone) and the plastic bag from Yes onto the counter. I look up, find the surveillance camera, lock my eyes while neatly placing items on counter. I even give up the receipts. Elisha comments "that sure is a NICE camera." "No, it isn't. It's a 100 dollar camera." I look up at the camera again. I smile and wave, despite the fact my hands are now shaking a bit. No stolen Burt's Bees contraband is found. I finally ask, "Hey manager lady, is this because I'm a black man?" She replies, "No. That has nothing to do with this." I laugh. "Then what does?" I collect my stuff while eyeballing the eye above my head. I look at Elisha as I exit the store. I have to ask: "I guess I shouldn't wear a trench coat any more, huh?" "No, you shouldn't" was her reply. You learn something new everyday.

Who says you can't eat healthy without it costing too much? Sadly, too many people. I've learned to navigate around this problem. First, I try to have a nearly precise idea of what I like to eat and look for those healthy foods. Buying too much can result in spending more than you have to and wasting what you don't eat. Second, I look for sales and good deals without compromising on quality. And lastly, try to stay away from organic/health food stores. Yes, they do carry good, fresh food but sometimes the prices are unreasonably inflated. Look at what I found today at my nearby, big name grocery store (Harris Teeter);
1. Bananas
2. Raisins
3. Unsweetened Apple Sauce

All three for only $3.00 and some change! So, there really isn't any reason not to eat healthy.

Yesterday I turned 42, and while I live in modest circumstances and get around by public transit and foot, I feel as rich as a king.

I was bombarded with well wishes from family and friends, some of whom I've known since the age of 5, others I met just this past year. I am a king indeed. This life I have been given is my kingdom and I rule it. Sometimes, I can be conservative, using caution when deciding my next move as monarch. But, my usual method is to rule my kingdom like a dictatorship, getting all I can get out of it, SQUEEZING THE SHIT OUT OF IT. I'm sometimes late in discovering music that others have both consumed and praised. I attribute this to my constant time shifting when it comes to culture in general and music in particular: I'm either rocking something from the past newly discovered (or re-discovered) OR , way off into some new,new shit.

So when I finally got around to putting on the new disc from Eryka Badu, all the hoopla surrounding her bare assed video for "Window Seat" had died down. I went through the tracks, and true to form, Ms. Badu had delivered another strong album, filled with slinky grooves and thought -provoking lyrics. I was most intrigued by the last cut, a bonus, entitled " Jump Up In The Air and Stay There" featuring the hardest working incarcerated rapper in the world, Lil'Wayne. The chorus sounded familiar to me right away: this song was a re-working of a George Clinton/Sly Stone composition from the early nineties entitled "Hydraulic Pump" which expresses the wish of so many"..I know you wanna, jump up in the air and stay there, jump up in the air AND STAY THERE.."

I meditated on the meaning of those words. George and Sly,once again, were right on point. Maybe we all feel that we belong up THERE. In that place, which can sometimes seem so far away, that place we dream about and WISH we could reside. We aspire to get to that place, if we, in fact, have the open eyes to realize it does,in fact, EXIST. Many of us have not a clue, and spend our time, on this plane, filling that void with whatever we can grasp: Money,drugs, booze,sex and all else. But, in the end, we're unfulfilled, disappointed. We again miss the target, and thus the point. We're all destined for some greatness, be it writing a book, painting a mural or scoring a touchdown. Others tell us, and then we believe, that we have to stay grounded. Fuck that, my peoples. Dare to dream, aim high, chart a course, pack your bags and JUMP.

The second event of the night had my son and I on the edge of the couch: The motocross vertical STEP UP!! As the name implies, six of the best moto-x riders (Kevin Windham, Brian Deegan, Matt Buyten, Jeremy McGrath, Ronnie Renner and Ricky Carmichael) attempt vertical leaps in the air begining with 27'. Carmichael was the favorite, having won the 2008 Step Up with a sucessful attempt at the 33' mark. All riders made the 27', but unfortunately Deegan missed the next 29' attempt and was eliminated.Kevin Windham held on until the 31' and hit the bar twice, forcing him to bow out. McGrath missed at 33' and Buyten at 34' leaving Ronnie and Ricky to go for the coveted honor of reaching 35 feet in the air!! As should be noted, while the other riders used more powerful 4 stroke bikes, Renner insisted on a 2 stroke, perhaps because of the lighter weight. Each of the riders were given three attempts at 35' and Carmichael gave the crowd and viewers at home a scare when he crashed on his second try and lay motionless for what seemed to be a few minutes. He declined a third try and shared the Gold with Renner who failed his three attempts. What a crazy ending to an insane competition! More to come...

Opening Night of the 2009 Summer X-Games 15 in LA

Thursday, July 30th was a night of expected thrills and surprising upsets. In the Big Air competition, the US was represented by Andy MacDonald, Adam Taylor and Robbie Loriface ; Brazil was represented by favorite Bob Burnquist and up and coming Edgar Perena but most eyes were on Jake Brown of Australia, who did not disappoint. The setup used in this event employed a 50 foot "kicker", a gap and a 20 foot rail. MacDonald and Taylor had spills early on and were eliminated before the 4th rounds, leaving Loriface to rep the US and setting up Burnquist and Brown to attempt the allusive 900. The forth round was full of excitement as Lorifice did a 360/540 backside rodeo to secure for himself the Bronze in this event. Burnquist exucuted a 180 Japan but spilled, (perhaps attempting a 900?) followed by Jake who nailed a beautiful 360 but failed at a 15' spin but held on to win the Gold. Great displays of sportsmanship as the seasoned skaters exchanged small talk and congrats between attempts. Gold favorite Bob Burnquist won the Silver but seemed rather conservative this year. Great start over all and more thrills are expected.
